Aiken is one of South Carolina’s most robust housing markets. Year-end 2006 state-wide home sales figures put Aiken behind only the Pee Dee region, which includes the Florence area.
“I’d rather be No. 1, obviously, but we outdid Hilton Head and all the beach resort areas,” says Mark Thompson, past president of the Aiken Board of Realtors.
“That’s indicative that people are trying to get to retirement areas that are both safe and secure and have a lot to offer. Our town continues to have its charm,” Thompson adds, pointing out that such features are particularly attractive to home buyers.
Home sales in the Aiken market in 2006 increased nearly 12.4 percent over the previous year. More than 1,870 homes, condominiums and villas were sold in Aiken last year, according to the S.C. Association of Realtors.
The median price of homes sold in Aiken this year reached $153,000, a 3.8 percent increase over the 2006 median home sales price, placing it slightly below the state average of $161,000.
Yet, Aiken’s housing market is more than impressive statistics. It’s a rich repertoire of attractive housing options for a variety of lifestyles. It’s a market where historic small-town charm has been preserved while contemporary living continues to thrive.
As prospective home buyers search for a better quality of life, they look more and more at Aiken.
Established neighborhoods, historic homes, townhouses, apartments, premium equestrian properties and gated communities are available in Aiken County amid lush, rolling hills and winding rivers and creeks.
Home buyers seeking a more historical flavor have much to choose from in history-rich Aiken. Historic homes populate Aiken’s downtown district. Some of these homes are noted on the National Register of Historical Places.
A number of neighborhoods in Aiken County offer residents on-site amenities, such as swimming pools, walking trails, riding trails, community stables and tennis courts.
